While adolescent change is inevitable, it is not written in stone that the relationship with parents will deteriorate, that the teen will do things that will damage their future, that they will be unreachable and impervious to your influence.

We are their primary teachers still, provided the connection is good. And connection depends on good communication. The onus is on the parents to lead the way in opening communication. One of the frustrating features of living with a teenager can be how they they take everything as a criticism. But the responsibility is the adult’s to make sure that what you’re trying to communicate is not heard as nagging, criticism and disapproval.
